How to set up your Plusnet Hub Two router - Full Fibre

A step-by-step guide to set up your Hub Two with your Full Fibre service.

Watch our short 3 min video or read our guide below to get set up.

Setting up your Hub Two with Full Fibre

We sent you a lovely box of goodies, so here’s a check list of what you’ll need to get set up:

    Plusnet Hub Two

    Ethernet cable

    Red ends

    Power supply

    Ethernet cable

    Yellow ends

    Your password sticker

With Full Fibre your hub needs connecting to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT).

This isn’t in the box as it’s supplied by Openreach. If you don’t have an ONT, an engineer will install one as part of your activation.

Where you set up your hub can make a big difference to your Full Fibre service:

    • Your hub plugs into an Openreach Optical Network Terminal (ONT) not a phone socket. When the engineer installs your ONT please make sure it’s in a place where you can easily plug your hub into it
    • If you’re using WiFi, it’s best to place your hub close to where you’ll be using broadband the most. Always make sure there’s nothing in the way that may block the wireless signal
    • Your hub needs cool air flow, so don’t place it on top of electrical equipment, or under a desk, on a carpet, or behind large objects
    • Your broadband will work better if you leave your hub switched on all the time, even when you’re not using it

    1. Connect your Hub Two

Plug one end of the Ethernet cable with red ends into your hub’s WAN port. Then plug the other end into the Openreach ONT’s PORT 1 / LAN 1 port (the number of ports on the ONT can differ).

    2. Connect your power supply to your hub and a mains socket

Slide the two parts of your power supply until they click into place. Connect your hub and press the Power button. After about three minutes, a blue light will show that your hub’s ready.

    3. Connect your devices

Use your hub’s wireless network name and password to connect your devices to the Internet. There’s a handy settings card on the back of your hub. This easily slots out, and you’ll find all the password info there. They’re also on the password sticker we sent you.

To save you typing in the details, you can also use the camera on a phone or tablet device to scan the QR code.

Another way to get connected is to use WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) if your device supports it. Just press the WPS button on the side of your hub (it will flash blue) and then follow your device’s instructions to connect.

You can also connect devices to your hub using the Ethernet cable with the yellow ends. Plug one end into your device and the other end into one of the Ethernet ports on the back of your hub.

Here’s a quick summary of the set up:

    1. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable with red ends into your hub’s WAN port. Then plug the other end into the Openreach ONT’s PORT 1 / LAN 1
    2. Connect your power supply
    3. Connect your devices

If you think there's an issue with your Hub Two, follow these steps and then check the lights to see what's wrong.

First, check everything's plugged in, then switch your computer and other devices off and on again.

    What your hub lights mean

If this doesn't work, have a look at the table below for what the lights mean and what to do next.

    Blue

Your hub is connected to your broadband OK

If you can't get online, try switching your device off and on. If it's the first time you've connected your hub, wait a minute or two.

    Orange

Your hub is working but isn't connected to the Internet

Connect your computer or device to your hub. Open a new web browser window and follow the on-screen steps to get connected. If this doesn't work, use a paper clip to press your hub's factory reset button.

    No light

The power is off or the lights have been turned off in the Hub Manager

Check the hub is plugged in, switched on and the lights haven't been turned off in the Hub Manager.

    Red

    There's a problem somewhere

Use the power button to turn your hub off and on again. If the light doesn't turn blue, use a paper clip to press your hub's factory reset button.

    Green

    Your hub is starting up

Wait for about three minutes for it to turn blue. If it stays green switch your hub off and on again. If that doesn't work, use a paper clip to press your factory reset button.

    Pink

Your hub is in Bridge Mode

Your hub has been switched to 'modem only' mode. Full Fibre doesn't support this. You can disable Bridge Mode in the Hub Manager. Or use a paper clip to press your hub's factory reset button.

    Flashing orange

Your hub is working but the Ethernet cable isn't connected

Check if the Ethernet cable with red ends is plugged in properly. If your ONT's got more than one PORT / LAN port, then try each one. Wait a few minutes each time to see if the light stops flashing.

    WPS button

    Flashing blue

If it's flashing blue it's waiting for you to press the WPS button on your computer or device.

    Flashing red

If it's flashing red, it didn’t connect. Give it a couple of minutes and try again.

If you're having problems with setting up your hub, it might be worth resetting it. Use a paper clip, pen, or something pointed to press in the reset pinhole button on the back of the router.

Keep the button pressed for 20 seconds. When the light on the front of your hub turns green, release the reset button.

When the light on the front of the hub turns blue, it's now restored to factory settings.

Keep in mind that if you do this, it'll completely restore your hub to the settings it had when it arrived. So if you've made specific changes to your settings, they'll need to be made again.

If you’re upgrading to a Full Fibre package and using a standard Plusnet Hub Two router, you’ll need to make a few changes to your hub set up.

We’ll take you through these easy to follow steps to get you up and running:

    1. Disconnect the broadband cable with grey ends. If you’re using a micro-filter this can also be unplugged
    2. To set up your Hub Two for Full Fibre you’ll need to use the Ethernet cable with yellow ends.

    Ethernet cable

    Yellow ends

    1. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable into the red WAN port on the back of your hub. Then plug the other end into the Openreach ONT PORT1/LAN 1
    1. Check your Hub and ONT are connected to a power supply
    2. After about three minutes, a blue light will show that your hub’s ready

If you were using the yellow-ended Ethernet cable to connect a device to your Hub, you’ll now need to connect it using an additional Ethernet cable, or use a WiFi connection.

To help you to get the best speed and quality from your connection, any new Ethernet cables you use will need to be a CAT5e or CAT6. This will be clearly labelled on the cable.

Ethernet cables are available from IT equipment retailers and BT Shop have lots of low price options to choose from.

    How to manage your hub

To view your Hub Manager, open a new browser window e.g. Chrome, Firefox or Safari and type in 192.168.1.254.

Here you can manage your hub settings and change things like your WiFi name and password. You’ll need the hub admin password to access and change some of the settings. You’ll find this on the back of your hub or on the password sticker.

If you’re having problems with your broadband then try clicking the Help tile on the Hub Manager Home page.

The WiFi network (or SSID) starts with PLUSNET and has letters or numbers at the end, e.g. PLUSNET-1A2B3C. The WiFi password (or key) is 10 characters long and it's case sensitive.

You'll find both printed on the card stored on the back of your hub.

    1. Log in to the Hub Manager
    2. Click Wireless

You’ll now see information about the WiFi bands broadcasting from your hub. Click the i icon to the left of each item for an explanation of what it does.

To change the WiFi settings of your hub:

    1. Log into the Hub Manager
    2. Click Wireless
    3. Click Change settings
    4. Enter your admin password

You might need to reconnect to your network after changing some of these settings (particularly the Network name, Security type or Security password).

Click the i icon to the left of each item for an explanation of what it does.

Your Hub supports UPnP which means that compatible games and applications will set up Port Forwarding automatically and you won't have to do anything. For games and apps that don't support this, you can set up Port Forwarding manually.

    1. Log into the Hub Manager
    2. Click Advanced Settings and then Firewall
    3. Enter your admin password
    4. Click Create a new port forwarding rule
    5. Enter the details for your port forwarding rule
    6. Click the + icon
    7. Click Save
